Home Town Founders & A Bit Of History Home Town Sports was founded in 1979 by Dean Hovdey and former Olympian Patty Boydstun-Hovdey. Dean and Patty had been very active in the ski industry for many years prior to the opening of the store. Dean was a certified ski instructor/coach and had worked in the ski school at Sun Valley and Brundage Mountain. He had also worked as a Pro Patrolman at Big Mountain, Montana, and at Brundage prior to that time. In addition, Dean was a two sport athlete (football and basketball) at the University of Montana from 1969-1971. He came to McCall in 1970 as a smokejumper.
Patty -- 5th generation Long Valley resident -- a "true local" born and raised in McCall, had been a member of the U.S.A. Women's Alpine Ski Team from 1968 to 1973. She placed 8th in the Olympic Slalom in Sapporro, Japan in 1972 and was Senior National Slalom Champion that same year. She coached ski racing for 7 years after retiring from the World Cup Circuit. With a passion for quality products & services, and a love for Idaho’s out-door sports and life-style, they served the Central Idaho Area and McCall residents for 27 years from a little log cabin shop, located by the Lardo Bridge. In July 2001, Home Town Sports relocated to the Downtown walking district and is now located at 300 Lenora Street by U.S. Bank. Patrons now enjoy the spacious new retail space for Home Town Storage, as well as the comfortable warmth of McCall’s “Alpine Ski History” placed in displays surrounding the store. Mementos and equipment of days-gone-by at The Little Ski Hill and Brundage Mountain make reason enough to stop by Home town Sports and enjoy the local and “Home Town” atmosphere. |
